Minds On: What Do We Know About Water?

Materials:

Minds On Statements.pdf; Student Outdoor Learning Journals; Chart paper; Markers; QUILLS online dictionary
Instructions:

Students are each given a card with a phrase on it (Found in Minds On Statements.pdf). Students circulate and share phrases with one another. While circulating students try to figure out what the unit is about. 

KWL

Brainstorm KWL Chart: Teacher records all the class knows about water- students can copy chart into their Outdoor Learning Journal (introduced in the Teacher’s Guide). The journal will be used for reflection and notes throughout the unit particularly when the students are engaged in learning on the land.

Language Primer
  • Students learn the Anishinaabemowin and Kanyen’kéha words for water and add words to their Outdoor Learning Journal (introduced in the Teacher’s Guide).  Students can hear words on the QUILLS online dictionary (accessible through the QUILLS website). Words can be listened to whenever necessary as a refresher.
