Culminating Task: Environmental Issues and Activism Inquiry Project

Materials:

Computer
Instructions:
  • Students research a current Canadian environmental issue and design an outline for a social justice campaign that can be implemented at their school.
  • Research must include a Western scientific explanation of the issue as well as an Indigenous land-based knowledge perspective.
  • Project should analyze any bias in the media sources they draw upon.
  • Project should examine how Indigenous law can work alongside or contribute to Western law. ie: to raise awareness and hold governments accountable but also protect water in communities by living in a good way.
  • It is important that the projects are empowerment focused. For instance, instead of asking students to only identify problems they should be asked to identify problems and solutions. Narratives that focus on Indigenous community members as victims should be challenged by stories and examples of Indigenous strength and resiliency.
  • Teachers should provide students with choice regarding how they choose to share their results through the use of a choice board. Options can include, creating an information poster using Canva, creating a comic book that clearly outlines the issue, holding a teach-in for other students in the school etc.
